“I got my period,” I told my family as I entered the door coming home from work. I wanted them to know, so they’d cut me some slack (and perhaps be extra nice to me). Oh how soon they forget. Rather than repeating myself over and over --“I have my period. Would you please let me have some space?” --I came up with an idea: a Moondays flag that you set out as a signal to let your family know you’re on your moon. If they forget, simply wave the flag. It seems to work really well. It also serves a visual reminder for me to honor my cycle and has become part of my monthly ritual. I decided to use white as the body of the flag fabric to symbolize purity and surrender. I see it as surrender to the natural cycle we are part of, going with the “flow” so to speak. It reminds me of the Mexican euphemism for menstruation: “me baja.” This came from the original “me baja la regla” or I’m under the “rule,” the rule being the law of nature that brings on our monthly cycles. I added a red ribbon to symbolize the flow of blood, some silver and red glass beads and a charm of a crescent moon with an angel resting on it. It comes with a base so you can stand it up, a pretty white organza bag to store it in and instructions in case you’d like to give one as a gift. May it serve you well.
